OFFICE OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL

March 14, 2007

The Nebraska Military Retiree Council met at 1300 on March 14th, 2007. The following Board of Directors were present: President Bill Nelson, Vice President Fred Gustin, Treasurer Ron Kroon, Secretary Janice Beard, Members-at-Large; John Bailey, Jerry Chenoweth, Al Peate, and Ollie Sapp. Bill Nelson called the meeting to order. The minutes of the previous meeting were read. There were no additions or corrections. The minutes stand as read.

Treasurer’s report was given by Ron Kroon. We have $5,825.25 in our treasury at this date. We took in $1,150. We gave a $50 memorial to the Don Leonard family. We have 632 members, of which 66 are widows, 75 are free, 304 are paid, 187 are not paid. Finance report approved.

Correspondence Received: Thank you note from the Family Readiness Network of the NE Air Guard for the Council’s gift in memory of Cecil Metzger.

OLD BUSINESS
Carlos, who updates our website is gone, to return next week. The personnel doing web site are unavailable and know the site needs to be updated.

Knolls Social update: 74 paid. Moved that we should invite Mrs. Metzger’s two daughters and their husbands. Seconded and passed. Al or Jerry will speak to them. We guaranteed 90 people, so we need to get more participation. Jerry noted that we might consider inviting Bob in the printing office due to the support he has given to our organization.

Al asked if there were any updates on Legislative Bills (LB). Bill noted that the Family Military Leave Act has gone through a 1st reading, was approved and looks favorable for being forwarded and approved. It appears all specialty license plates are dead with the possible exception of Gold Star plates, the discussion of which has been advanced to the Floor.

NEW BUSINESS
John Bailey noted that Marvin Leners is knowledgeable about the military leave bill, regarding reimbursement to technicians who were forced to use leave on weekends when on they were on military leave. Members wishing to make claims must have a Leave and Earnings Statement and/or orders and be able to prove they had to use leave.

Fred has looked into this and said that old LES’s are not available. Bill Nelson asked not so much for a briefing for us as for Marv to write an article we could include with future minutes. John Bailey will contact Marv to ask him and he will also contact Lynda Haymes to ask if she is aware of old LES’s being stored anywhere.

Jerry said that since our “off” month mailings are only being sent to a few people, we should consider using email as far as possible and mail the rest—also motioned that Ron email the Board members the complete membership listing each month. Second by John, and passed.

Discussion was raised that the USAF is going to quit issuing base stickers on March 15th with the other services to follow at a later date. Chief Matt Swetland confirmed that the USAF has stopped. The ANG however will continue to issue vehicle decals for the foreseeable future.

Janice Beard, Secretary

Can I pay for 5 years at one time? If I die you keep the money, ha. Really I would like to pay for several years, just like AARP. Steve Fisher

Any provisions for life membership rather than dealing with $5/year? Tom Dolnicek

Why couldn’t a person be a life member – say one pays $50 for a hard card membership. This could save time and money and keep people from not renewing. Just an idea. Richard K. Worthman

I’d like to see a multiple year membership (5 years/$25 or 10 years/$50). I’d also like to see the minutes posted on the web page. Then anyone who wants can read the minutes on the web site. All someone has to do is send an e-mail saying “the minutes can now be viewed on the web page.” Our church has done this for 3-4 years and it saves a lot of money for mailings. Those without a computer or who prefer the mailing could still have theirs mailed. Items like the dinner/social could also be posted on the web page. Just “print screen” and send the filled out form back as you would the one you received through the mail. Just my opinion. Dean Henke

Not knowing for sure if you have one or not, we would suggest a picnic in one of your parks. David Von Seggern

Partner with the local Air Force Sergeants Association and Air Force Association in respect to having a retiree attend and report on local chapter meetings and events. Have a letter of introduction from the retiree council sent to the Nebraska Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee with items of interest in Council minutes. Does the Council have a liaison between this committee and the council? Randall Hansen

I sure would like to know what the status of the attempt to get the retirement (drawing pension) age lowered to 55. I know the chances are slim but would like to know where it stands. Donald Rupp.
